San Jorge de Sumaco Bajo Bird Sanctuary (Tropical Amazonian Rainforest)

Altitude range: 450 to 600 mts. o.s.l.; 1485 to 1980 ft. o.s.l.

San Jorge de Sumaco Bajo features 400 acres of untouched, tropical Amazonian rainforest. The ideal place to explore and soak in all that is Ecuador, this prehistoric wilderness is surrounded by several protected areas, including Sumaco-Galeras National Park. The crystal-clear water flows peacefully from streams to rivers to springs, so bring your bathing suit for a relaxing afternoon swim. Birders and photographers alike will find pleasure at the feeders, trails, or the newly constructed sixty-foot tower. The towers vantage point offers enough space and solitude to erect a tripod to capture some of the 550 bird species and other wildlife that call this diverse climate their home. If you need a little more relaxation or a locally-themed meal, there are thatched huts and hammocks, a barbeque area and traditional outdoor ovens, with the option of local cooking lessons, are here for your enjoyment.
